Frontier Development & Hospitality Group, in partnership with Basis Investment Group, has opened the Hyatt House Washington DC Downtown Convention Center. Located on the site of a former Cambria, the property is within walking distance of the Walter E. Washington Convention Center and central to both downtown D.C. and the Shaw neighborhood.
The 184-room hotel is operated and managed by Donohoe Hospitality Services. Designed for both short and extended-stay guests, the property has a mix of room types. Apartment style suites have full kitchens and closets and separate living areas. Public spaces include a 24/7 fitness center and communal spaces.
“We’re thrilled to introduce the second Hyatt House to the neighbors of my hometown, Washington D.C., and to visitors attending events at the Convention Center,” Evens Charles, founder & CEO of Frontier Development & Hospitality Group, said in a statement. “This project reflects our commitment to investing in communities that embody culture, creativity, and forward momentum. We see a clear need for thoughtful design and extended-stay accommodations in DC and we cannot wait to open an exciting new rooftop destination later this fall. We are proud to be a part of this exciting, continued evolution in Shaw - helping shape its future while honoring its rich cultural roots.”
Later this fall, the hotel will open an all-weather, 157-seat rooftop bar and lounge.
The hotel opens under the leadership of D.C.-native Donte Johnson as the area GM for Donohoe. Johnson returns to his hometown after years leading hotels in Miami Beach, Baltimore and—most recently—Atlanta. “Donte grew up in this neighborhood and he understands how much we are invested in this community,” said Thomas Penny, president of Donohoe Hospitality Services. “I am excited to work with the team to create a space where visitors can live like locals, whether they are staying for a few days or a month.”
