Rhode Island Marriott completes guestroom redo, opens new terraces

The Newport (R.I.) Marriott Hotel & Spa is completing a multimillion-dollar renovation, which includes design updates to the guestrooms and the addition of new terraces overlooking Newport Harbor.

Designed in collaboration with EoA Group—which also led a property update 10 years ago—the $9 million renovation impacts most of the guest spaces on the property. The design continues to be rooted in the sport of sailing with new and dynamic layers of vibrancy, color and texture that make for a serene retreat in a seaside town, according to the company.

“With this multimillion-dollar renovation, we are the premier destination to stay in Newport,” general manager Walter Andrews said in a statement. “You cannot find a hotel with a more centralized location in downtown Newport, providing easy access to all the city has to offer. And now with the addition of the Hideaway Terrace, the varied experiences offered on property make the Newport Marriott Hotel & Spa the perfect launching point for exploration of our gorgeous destination.”

Design Details

The 312 guestrooms and 8 suites have been transformed into coastal sanctuaries with a neutral and layered seaside color palate, along with warm wood tones and delicate brass accents. New Forth Surfaces carpets are infused with hints of blue designed to evoke the presence of water.

The existing textured sail—which stretches the length of the boat-decking-inspired headboard—is complemented by new artwork from Saatchi inspired by the clam shells found throughout New England.

The updated rooms also have custom light fixtures by HB Lighting, desk chairs by Adriana Hoyos, and sheer and blackout drapery by Valley Forge.

Meanwhile, the fifth floor has new terraces that are designed to be natural extensions of the harbor with a mix of cloud white for the walls, trellis and firepits with ocean-blue accents on the sofa cushions and chairs.

The new Hideaway Terrace pool deck and bar—which will have the capability to host as many as 150 people—is scheduled to open in July and spans more than 2,600 square feet (821 of which are dedicated to the renovated indoor pool area). Light coral and soft brown colors distinguish the Hideaway Terrace from the lighter and brighter guestrooms.
