Sheraton Minneapolis reopens following major renovation

The Sheraton Minneapolis Downtown Convention Center has resumed operations following a six-month, $40 million renovation and repositioning.

Located on the site of the city’s historic Capp Towers Motor Hotel in downtown Minneapolis and in close proximity to the Minneapolis Convention Center, the 14-story hotel has been a fixture of the Twin Cities for over six decades, according to the company. Owned and operated by the Capp family, the transformed property now has a redesign of its 321 guestrooms; design and functional upgrades to all 19 event spaces; additional public spaces; two new dining concepts; and an indoor pool.

“Partnering with Sheraton, a pioneer in providing community-focused hospitality, was a natural fit as we embark on this transformative new chapter for the property,” Austin Tyler-Thull, general manager, Sheraton Minneapolis Downtown, said in a statement. “As we open today as Sheraton Minneapolis Downtown Convention Center, we look forward to providing guests of all types with a fresh and welcoming environment that fosters comfort, ease and connection.”

Marriott—which has a portfolio of more than 30 brands, including Sheraton Hotels & Resorts— partnered with architecture and design firm Gensler to oversee the full scope of the renovation. Marrying the property’s classic history with Sheraton’s vision to be The World’s Gathering Place, every guest touchpoint was designed to create a warm, approachable atmosphere that serves the needs of modern business and leisure travelers, according to the company.

With decor of light oak, neutral textiles and tan leathers, each guestroom was designed to create a feeling of timeless comfort. The guestrooms include powered height-adjustable tables and ergonomic seating, as well as Sheraton Sleep Experience platform beds, walk-in showers and offset TV walls.

The Sheraton Minneapolis Downtown includes 23,500 square feet of flexible event and meeting spaces. Each venue features new light fixtures, updated carpeting, fresh millwork and a fully reimagined lobby. New amenities include The Community Table, which was designed to be a purpose-built workspace that anchors the space and allows for both creativity and productivity. The hotel also includes The Booths, soundproofed spaces for focused thinking or calls; and The Studios, hi-tech, light-filled studios for small group meetings.

Sheraton Minneapolis Downtown’s opening also marks the debut of Esther’s Table, named for Esther Capp, matriarch of the Capp family. Led by executive chef Keven Kvalsten, the menu is rooted in the seasonality of the Midwest and the essence of local culture. In addition, guests working in the lobby will enjoy &More by Sheraton, the brand’s signature food and beverage concept that serves as the epicenter of the hotel’s welcoming public space, according to the company.
